Advanced Leadership for Academics and Professionals
Participation in the program will last from January 2010 through December 2010. |
Training and Organizational Development is pleased to announce the new Advanced Leadership for Academics and Professionals program. Designed in cooperation with UF's Office of the Provost, Faculty Senate, Human Resource Services, and Senior Vice President for Administration, this newly designed leadership program is for UF academics and professionals interested in focusing on more formal ways to contribute in leadership positions at UF as well as those who wish to further explore and develop their leadership skills.
Offering two tracks—one for academic leaders and the other for professional staff—the program is based on leadership competencies specifically identified as being important for success at UF. Our competency model was developed based on interviews and focus groups with UF's successful professional and academic leaders.
Program participants will attend certain activities within their tracks; at other times, the tracks will come together to explore leadership development issues. Meeting dates, times, and location are shared below.
Fee to participate: This year, due to the support of the Senior Vice President for Administration and the Vice President for Human Resource Services, the fee is being reduced from an expected $1,000 per participant to $750. All materials (including a 360-degree evaluation pre- and post-program), facilitation fees, and meals are included with no travel needed for those who work in Gainesville.
Program dates: The program will meet six times over the course of 2010—typically 1.5 days each time. Participants are expected to attend each session as scheduled. The program will be held at the UF President’s House in Gainesville and will include some evening hours. See below for specific dates and times.

Eligibility:
To be considered for the Academic Track, the applicant must be a UF faculty member in a leadership role. To be considered for the Professional Track, the applicant must be in a TEAMS position at the assistant director level or above.
Academic Track:
Designed for the individual focused on more formal ways to contribute in leadership positions at the institution. Useful for academics who are interested in:
- Furthering the programs of their colleges and the university through a better understanding of shared governance, university operations, and service.
- Developing skills and tools to more effectively manage and lead people, including individual 360-degree assessments pre- and post-completion of the program.
- Mentoring junior colleagues.
- Department chair-level service.
- Helping to move a global agenda forward while helping others meet their goals.
Professional Track:
Designed for professional staff members who are established leaders (assistant director or above) as a way to further explore and develop their leadership skills by:
- Providing them with skills and tools to more effectively manage and lead people, including individual 360-degree assessments pre- and post-completion of the program.
- Developing their skills to affect UF's competitiveness in its move into the "Top 10."
- Increasing their understanding of key university-wide strategic initiatives and challenges.
Curriculum Highlights:
“Leadership: Great Leaders, Great Teams, Great Results,” Franklin-Covey, includes individual 360-degree assessments pre- and post-completion of the program. This provides a framework for understanding excellence in leadership generally, with feedback about “current state” of one’s own performance.
Leadership competencies used as structure, based on what’s most important for leadership success at UF.
Invited program facilitators/guest speakers will be correlated with key competencies and will be drawn from the University of Florida as well as from other appropriate institutions. Depending on the competency being discussed, the academic and professional tracks may have different facilitators/guest speakers; at other times the academic and professional participants will be together.
Key leadership challenges presented as case studies—some focusing on academic issues; others, on administrative/professional. Examples of topics: the impact of rotating leadership at the department level, setting priorities in the face of budgetary realities, articulating a department vision, mentoring and retaining junior faculty and/or staff, addressing faculty and staff performance concerns.
Selected readings will take into account academic or professional perspectives.
Team projects that focus on areas of concern for the institution will be identified to further challenge the participants to move from strong individual contributors to ones who can collaborate and solve problems as team members on behalf of the institution.
Job shadowing of appropriate UF academic or professional leaders.
