Leave Entitlements Chart

Vacation

Vacation leave is earned each pay period and credited on the last day of that pay period. There is no waiting period for using vacation leave. An employee may only use vacation leave that has been credited into his or her balance.

Sick

Sick Leave accruing Academic Personnel, USPS and TEAMS employees begin earning sick leave from the time they are employed; it is credited on the last day of each pay period. There is no waiting period for using sick leave. Employee may only use what is available in the balance prior to future accrual.

Full-time eligible Academic Personnel, TEAMS and USPS employees earn four hours each biweekly pay period, or a number of hours that is directly proportionate to the number of hours in pay status during less than a full pay period. Sick leave for part-time employees is earned in proportion to the amount of time in pay status during each pay period. There is no limit to the amount of sick leave employees may accrue.

Sick Leave Pool

The university's Sick Leave Pool is a way for employees to combine a portion of their individually accrued sick leave for collective use.

 

Holidays and Personal Leave Days

Leave-accruing Academic Personnel, USPS, and TEAMS employees are eligible for ten paid holidays each year.

Domestic Violence Leave

Under a new Florida law, as of July 1, 2007, Florida employers must provide employees up to 3 days of leave in a twelve-month period if the employee or a family or household member is a victim of domestic violence. The fiscal year of July 1 to June 30 will be considered the 12-month period.

Compensatory Leave

There are three types of compensatory leave: overtime compensatory leave, regular compensatory leave, and special compensatory leave. The maximum accrual rate is 120 hours for both regular and overtime compensatory leave.

Extended Leave of Absence

“Extended leave” encompasses forms of leave with or without pay that last longer than 15 consecutive workdays. Extended leave may be provided for medical (self and family), parental, military, and personal reasons.

Family Medical and Leave Act (FMLA)

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is federal legislation enacted to provide job protection for up to 12 weeks an entitlement year to an employee, or for an employee to care for his or her parent, spouse, or child who has a serious health condition determined to be FMLA-qualifying by the patient’s physician, or when a employee must be absent due to becoming a parent. Employers must approve leave for events that qualify under the FMLA. Employees hired into leave-accruing positions are eligible for FMLA leave upon hire at the University of Florida.

Leave and State Transfers

Effective March 30, 2007, an employee may transfer up to 80 hours of vacation leave and 80 hours of sick leave when transferring from a state agency, state institution, state university, or from Santa Fe College.
